First episode of the final season of Smallville.... WOW.
Wow is my first descriptor.
Personally I thought it was an amazing episode, probably the best season premiere for Smallville in the show's history. It had a little bit of everything, and I felt that it dealt with everything left off in the finale pretty well. For the purposes of my review, I will look at each of the major players and tell you what I liked.
Tess Mercer
Tess awoke in a dark laboratory only to discover that her badly burned face was miraculously fixed. Pretty damn cool if you ask me. I mean she went from being all "Phantom of the Opera" to having a perfect complexion once again. But, the best part of Tess' arc in the episode was discovering that the lab was full of Lex clones... LEX CLONES!!!! How does the man get any eviler!? He's "dead" and still has an army of clones. Freaking creepy ass clones! Like little Alexander... he's not so much creepy. What was creepy was that Tess took him back to the mansion..... WTF!? I am wondering if he's going to play a role in the show anymore. My biggest wonder is why Tess would bring mini-Lex home...
Lex Clone
Ahh the Lex clone. Besides Alexander, there was one clone that played a significant role in the episode. I don't know how they found that actor, but shit did they ever do a good job of casting him-- because he was perfect Lex. I really enjoyed seeing the character brought to life again (although my disappointment that it was not Michael Rosenbaum still abounds). The writers did an awesome job keeping him so perfectly Lex. Just his lines, and the way he delivered them fit perfectly with the Lex we already love to hate. And in typical Lex Luthor fashion... he went after Clark's biggest weakness; the woman he loves. I love that Lex knew all about Clark.. it makes his dark intentions so much more powerful.
Lois
Well, as always, Lois is my favorite character. She was amazing.... I loved how quickly she realized that her relationship with Clark could pose a serious risk to him being the saviour he is becoming. I am enjoying the fact that she knows, and that it took nothing more than a kiss for her to discover the truth. I am not sure how I feel about her taking off to Africa afterall... I can understand where it's coming from-- a desire to preserve Clark's secret. But... but... LOIS! She's belongs in Metropolis, jabbing Clark with snappy remarks on a daily basis!
Oliver
I don't have much to say about Oliver... I wasn't really too impressed with him. Other than the fact that he was naked.... that I don't mind at all. But really, he was getting his ass kicked again. It seems to me that it happens a lot. I don't know what his value to the story is anymore... he's starting to become disposable. I did think it was cute that he told Chloe he loved her... but that didn't take him very long. Only a few months prior he was still in love with Lois... and now all of a sudden he's in love with her cousin!? WTF... that's a little too close to home for me. If my ex started dating my cousin, I would have some serious issues with that.
Chloe
Like Oliver, Chloe is becoming redundant. Don't get me wrong: I love both the characters. I am just starting to lose sight of what they are still doing on the show. She's occupied with the whole "Watchtower" thing, and Clark's not really into the team aspect yet. He only gets together when they all really need each other. And now that Clark works at the Daily Planet (because he apparently didn't know how to use google before) he is doing a lot more of his own research into things. I am also a little pissed that Chloe went out and used Dr. Fate's helmet, even against Clark's better judgment. She's just asking for trouble with that.
Johnathon
Well, Papa Kent was back. And I am ecstatic! I thought his scene was fantastic. It was just simple and he was just Johnathon Kent. It was exactly what Clark needed. Jor-el is a huge douchebag... let's face it. Johnathon Kent is the real father.
Clark
Clark went through a lot in this episode. And there's far too much to discuss without going on and on and on and on... okay you get it. But basically what I am taking away from the episode in regards to Clark is as follows....
If Clark Kent wants to become the hero he needs to be, and the man he is supposed to be, then he needs to look to his earth father. Jor-El may have thought that he knew about human nature and what they would need in a hero... but he doesn't have the same understanding. Johnathon is human... and he loves Clark unconditionally. How many people would be comfortable with finding an alien boy in a corn field and raising him regardless of that fact that he may have fried them with his heat vision.
I think that Clark's path to becoming a true hero will come from being the man that his father would have wanted, and believed that he could be. To me, Johnathon is and always will be Clark's real father.
But, I have yammered on long enough. And this may not be the most comprehensive review ever, but it is here regardless. I also understand that you may not agree with me, and I am totally cool with that. But let me know what you think!!
Do you agree with my thoughts? Or do you think I am totally off base??
